Is Mathematics Compulsory at SPM?
Mathematics (1449) is a compulsory SPM subject, every school candidate registers for it. Here is what that means for your child, and why the grade matters.
A compulsory subject
Lembaga Peperiksaan lists Mathematics 1449 among the compulsory (wajib) SPM subjects, alongside the other core subjects, in its registration circular, every school candidate sits it. It is also one of only three subjects offered in the SPM Ulangan (the resit exam).
We say nothing here about the conditions for the SPM certificate itself; those are set out by Lembaga Peperiksaan in circulars we have not been able to verify from a machine-readable source, so check with your school.
Why it matters a lot
The Mathematics grade appears on the SPM result slip and is looked at closely for further study, matriculation, foundation and STPM pathways, and many courses. A strong Mathematics grade keeps doors open, which is the real reason to aim high.
