The SPM Mathematics Formula Sheet: What’s Given and What’s Not

A set of formulae is printed in the exam, so memorising them is not the point, choosing the right one and substituting correctly is. Spend your practice learning when each formula applies, not reciting the ones already on the page.

The formulae not printed are the ones to secure in memory, and more importantly, the methods behind them. Make your own short list of what the sheet does not give you for each chapter, and drill those until they are automatic.

The formula sheet is printed inside the exam paper itself, so there's no separate booklet to request or lose track of, but that also means it's easy to forget it's there under time pressure. Building the habit of glancing at it before starting a chapter's questions, rather than only when stuck, saves the specific waste of solving a problem the slow way when a listed formula would have gotten there faster.

It's worth going through a copy of the actual formula sheet at home well before the exam, not just once near the end, so its layout is familiar enough that you can find the right line in seconds during the real paper.

Reading the formula sheet is not the same skill as reaching for the right line under exam conditions. The useful practice is solving past-year questions with the actual sheet beside you, so you build the habit of checking it at the moment you need a formula rather than trying to recall it from memory first and only checking as a backup.

This also surfaces a formula's exact notation and variable names, which matters because a small mismatch between how you wrote it and how the sheet states it can be where a careless slip creeps in. Treat the sheet as a working tool during practice, not a reference you consult only once you're already stuck.
