Calculator Statistics Mode for SPM Mathematics

Most scientific calculators have a statistics mode that finds the mean and standard deviation quickly. Used carefully, it is a fast check on your working.

Enter the data carefully

On most scientific calculators you switch to statistics mode, enter each value (and each frequency for grouped data), then read off the mean and standard deviation. The exam still wants your written working, so use the mode to check, not to replace it.

  1. Take the data 6, 8, 10, 12, 14. Enter statistics mode (usually through the MODE menu) and choose single-variable statistics.
  2. Type each value followed by = : 6 = 8 = 10 = 12 = 14 = .
  3. Leave the entry screen and open the statistics results menu, then select the mean (x̄). The display reads 10.
  4. Select the population standard deviation (shown as σx or σn). The display reads about 2.83.
  5. Check by hand: total 50 ÷ 5 = 10 for the mean, and √(40 ÷ 5) = √8 ≈ 2.83 for the standard deviation.

Read the right standard deviation

Most calculators show two standard deviations: the population one (σx or σn) and the sample one (sx or σn−1). SPM 1449 uses the population standard deviation, which divides by n, not by n − 1.

Picking the wrong one gives a value that is slightly too large, so always confirm you are reading the σx / σn figure before you write it down.

Frequently asked questions

The calculator gives two standard deviations, which one does SPM want?

SPM Mathematics uses the population standard deviation, labelled σx or σn, which divides by n. The sample version sx or σn−1 divides by n − 1 and is not what the syllabus expects.

If your value looks a touch too large, you probably read the sample one by mistake.

How do I enter grouped data with frequencies?

Turn on the frequency setting in the statistics menu, then enter each class midpoint in the value column and its frequency beside it. The calculator then treats a midpoint of 25 with frequency 4 as four values of 25, which is exactly how the mean and standard deviation formulas handle it.

Can I just write the calculator's answer without showing working?

In Paper 2 you still need the working, because method marks come from the formula and substitution. Use the statistics mode as a fast check: work the mean and standard deviation out on paper, then confirm the final figures match the calculator before moving on.
