How it is used
With a taxable income of RM37,000 and the rate table given (tax on the first RM35,000 = RM600, and 8% on the balance), the income tax is RM600 + 8% × RM2,000 = RM600 + RM160 = RM760.
Where it shows up in SPM
In Consumer Mathematics (Taxation), Form 5. A typical Paper 2 item gives a banded rate table and asks you to compute the tax step by step; Paper 1 may ask a single-band percentage calculation or which band a taxable income falls into.

Frequently asked questions
How do I use a banded (progressive) rate table?
Take the fixed tax shown for the completed lower bands, then apply the next band's percentage only to the part of income above that band. Add the two together.
For RM37,000: RM600 for the first RM35,000, plus 8% of the RM2,000 above it.
Does the higher percentage apply to my whole income?
No. Only the portion inside each band is taxed at that band's rate.
The lower bands keep their lower rates, which is why the table gives a fixed amount for the completed bands and a percentage only for the balance above them.
Is this the same as learning tax law?
No. SPM Mathematics only tests the arithmetic of computing tax from a table given in the question.
You are not expected to know current official rates from memory or to give tax advice; just apply the figures provided correctly.
