How SPM Mathematics Is Marked

Understanding how marks are awarded changes how you write. Paper 1 is right-or-wrong; Paper 2 rewards each correct step along the way.

Analytic vs dichotomous

Paper 1 uses dichotomous scoring, a question is right or wrong. Paper 2 uses analytic scoring, so method marks are given for correct steps even if the final answer is wrong.

That is exactly why clear, complete working pays off.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between how Paper 1 and Paper 2 are marked?

Paper 1 uses dichotomous scoring: each of the 40 questions is simply right or wrong, worth one mark, with nothing for working shown. Paper 2 uses analytic scoring, where each question is broken into steps and marks are awarded for each correct stage of method, so two students can get the same final answer but different total marks depending on how they got there.

What are "method marks" and how do I earn them in Paper 2?

Method marks reward a correct approach at each stage of a solution, using the right formula, setting up the right equation, or substituting correctly, even before you reach a final answer. You earn them by writing each step in order so the examiner can see the logic, rather than jumping straight from the question to a final number.

Can I score marks in Paper 2 even if my final numeric answer is wrong?

Yes, in most cases, Paper 2 marks are given step by step, so an error in your final answer usually only costs the marks tied to that step. Working before the mistake still earns marks, and applying your own (even if wrong) result correctly afterward often can too, which is why finishing a question with a slip beats abandoning it halfway.
