Writing Full Structured Answers in Paper 2
Paper 2 gives marks for the steps, not only the final answer. This is the four-part structure, state, substitute, simplify, answer, that earns every method mark on offer.
State the rule or formula
Always start by writing the relevant law, formula or definition in symbols, before putting in any numbers. This line alone often earns a mark on its own, and it commits you to a correct starting point.
Substitute clearly
Copy the given values into the formula on the next line, matching each symbol to its value exactly as given, including negative signs and units. A marker checks this line against the question, so it must be a faithful copy, not an already-simplified version.
Simplify one step at a time
Work through the arithmetic or algebra on separate lines, one operation per line, rather than jumping straight to a final number. If the final answer is wrong, a marker can still find and credit the correct steps that came before the slip.
Finish with the answer and its units
End with a clear final line, the value, correctly rounded to the accuracy the question asks, with its unit attached and, where helpful, underlined or boxed. A correct number without its unit, or buried in the middle of your working, can still lose the last mark.
