How SPM Mathematics Marks Are Awarded
Understanding the difference between method marks and answer marks changes how you write your solutions, and how many marks you keep.
Method marks reward the working
In Paper 2 many marks are for the correct method, awarded even if the final number is wrong. That is why showing the formula, substitution and each step matters: a slip at the end still keeps the method marks if the working is there.
Paper 1 and Paper 2 are scored differently
The two papers reward different things. Paper 1 uses dichotomous scoring, an answer is right or wrong, with nothing for the steps, so speed and accuracy are everything.
Paper 2 uses analytic scoring, awarding marks for the method as well as the answer. That is why the same student writes tersely in Paper 1 and shows full working in Paper 2: the papers are asking for different things.
What a full-mark solution contains
- State the formula or rule you are using, in the form given if the exam provides it.
- Substitute the numbers from the question cleanly, so the marker sees exactly where each value goes.
- Show the calculation to a final value, keeping the units with the number.
- Answer the actual question asked, the largest, the cheaper, the angle, in a clear closing line.
Follow-through: one slip need not sink the rest
Under analytic marking, a wrong value early does not automatically lose every mark after it. If you carry that value correctly through the remaining steps, those later steps can still earn their marks, often called follow-through.
A worked example: if you mis-add a total as 58 instead of the correct 60, but then correctly halve your figure to 29, the halving step still shows correct method. Clear working is what makes follow-through possible.

Frequently asked questions
Do I get the mark if my answer is right but I showed no working?
In Paper 1, yes, it is right or wrong, and no working is needed. In Paper 2 it is riskier: many marks are for the method, so a bare answer can score less than a fully shown one, and if the answer is wrong there is nothing to earn method marks.
Always show working in Paper 2.
If my final answer is wrong, do I get zero for the question?
Not necessarily in Paper 2. Because analytic scoring gives marks for correct steps, a solution that quotes the right formula and substitutes properly can keep most of its marks even with a slip at the end.
In Paper 1, though, there are no part-marks, a wrong answer scores zero for that question.
Are marks taken away for wrong working?
No, you are not penalised below zero for a wrong step. Markers award the marks your correct work earns; they do not subtract for the parts that are wrong.
So it is always worth attempting and showing your method: at worst you gain nothing, and at best you pick up method marks you would have missed by leaving it blank.
