SPM Mathematics Paper 2 Strategy
Paper 2 has three sections and rewards clear written working. Knowing how the sections are weighted tells you where to spend your time.
Spend time where the marks are
Paper 2 runs Section A, B and C, with Section C offering a choice of questions. Read the whole paper first, start with the section you are strongest in, and in Section C choose the question you can complete fully rather than the one that looks easiest at a glance.
Show every step
Section B and C questions carry method marks, so quote the formula, substitute clearly and keep units. Even an answer that goes wrong at the end can earn most of its marks from clean working.
How the 100 marks are split
Paper 2 is worth 100 marks over 2 hours 30 minutes, divided into three sections: Section A: 10 questions (40 marks), answer all; Section B: 5 questions (45 marks), answer all; Section C: 2 questions (15 marks), answer one. Knowing this split tells you where the marks actually live, the bulk sit in Sections A and B, which you answer in full, while Section C is a single chosen question.
Time should follow the marks, not your comfort.
A time budget for the whole paper
- Work at roughly a minute and a half for every mark, that is the pace 2 hours 30 minutes across 100 marks allows.
- That puts about an hour on Section A, a little over an hour on Section B, and around twenty minutes on your chosen Section C question.
- Hold back the last few minutes to check units, signs, and that each answer responds to what was asked.
Read the command word before you start
Paper 2 questions tell you exactly what is wanted through their command word. 'Calculate' and 'solve' expect full working to a value; 'show that' means you must reach the given result and justify every step; 'sketch' wants shape and key features rather than a precise plot; 'state' or 'write down' needs only the answer.
Answering the wrong command, a long calculation where a one-line 'state' was asked, wastes time you have budgeted elsewhere.

How long is Paper 2 and how is it divided?

What should I do if I can't finish Paper 2 in time?
Protect the marks you can still reach. Because analytic scoring rewards correct steps, write the formula and substitution for any question you start, even without finishing, that earns method marks.
Move on the moment a question overruns, and come back only if time allows. Never leave a startable question completely blank.
