Consumer Mathematics: Financial Management: Paper 2 Answering Guide

How Consumer Mathematics: Financial Management appears in Mathematics Paper 2 (Subjective), and how to lay out your working so you earn every method mark.

How it is examined

Questions are set in everyday money situations, a salary, rent, monthly expenses, and ask you to compute cash flow, interest or a simple plan. Any tax or rate figure that appears is illustrative for the question, not a current official rate, and should be used exactly as given.

Showing your working

Mathematics Paper 2 (Subjective) is worth 100 marks and gives marks for the steps, not only the answer. Write each line clearly: state the formula or rule, substitute the numbers, then simplify.

If the question carries units, carry them through to the final line.

The question

Encik Danial earns a gross monthly salary of RM4,000. His employer deducts EPF at 11% of the gross salary, and his monthly living expenses total RM2,560.

(a) Calculate his monthly net cash flow. (b) He saves the whole surplus each month for 6 months, then places the total in a fixed deposit paying 4% simple interest per year for 18 months.

Calculate (i) the interest earned and (ii) the maturity value.

Mark-earning layout, line by line

  1. (a) EPF deduction: 11% × RM4,000 = RM440.
  2. Take-home pay: RM4,000 − RM440 = RM3,560.
  3. Net cash flow: RM3,560 − RM2,560 = RM1,000 (a surplus).
  4. (b) Principal saved: 6 × RM1,000 = RM6,000.
  5. State the rule: I = Prt, with r = 4% = 0.04 and t = 18 ÷ 12 = 1.5 years.
  6. Substitute: I = 6,000 × 0.04 × 1.5.
  7. Simplify: I = RM360, the interest earned.
  8. Maturity value: MV = P + I = RM6,000 + RM360 = RM6,360.

Frequently asked questions

If my final number is wrong but my method is right, do I still get marks?

Yes. Paper 2 awards method marks for a correctly stated rule and a correct substitution, separately from the final answer mark.

So if you write I = Prt, substitute 6000 × 0.04 × 1.5 correctly, but slip in the final arithmetic, you keep the method marks. This is why every line of working is worth writing out.

Do I have to write the formula before substituting numbers?

It is strongly advised. Stating I = Prt or MV = P + I first shows the examiner you chose the right tool, which often carries its own mark.

Jumping straight to numbers risks losing that mark and makes an error harder to trace. Formula, then substitution, then answer with units is the safest order.

How should I present a money answer with units in Paper 2?

Write the currency in front and round to the nearest sen, for example RM6,360.00 or RM360. Give the final answer on its own line so the examiner finds it easily, and add a short label such as 'maturity value' when a part asks for a specific quantity.

Clear, labelled answers protect the final mark.
