SPM Mathematics Glossary
Congruency, Enlargement and Combined Transformations, terms
Frequently asked questions
Which terms in this chapter are most easily mixed up?
Students often confuse "congruent" (same shape and size) with "similar" (same shape, different size after enlargement), and mix up "object" with "image" the object is the original figure, the image is the result after a transformation. Scale factor and centre of enlargement are also easy to swap when describing an enlargement fully.
How should I learn these transformation terms, which order makes the most sense?
Start with translation, reflection and rotation, since they only change position, not size, and build your sense of "object" versus "image". Move to enlargement next, adding scale factor and centre of enlargement.
Finish with congruency and combined transformations, which need you to apply two or more of the earlier terms together.
How do these terms typically show up in an SPM exam question?
Exam questions usually give a diagram with an object and its image, then ask you to name the transformation and state it fully, for example, an enlargement needs both the scale factor and the centre stated, not just the word "enlargement". Combined transformation questions ask for two transformations applied one after another.
